Performance Arc’teryx Ski Pant Design
The Sentinel Relaxed pant makes skiing effortless with zero fabric friction and no bulk
A few factors make the Arc’teryx Sentinel Relaxed Pant a high-performing ski pants. A couple of reasons prevent us from deeming them fantastic as snowboarding pants. However, the pants’ patterning thrives in both skiing and snowboarding movements.
Arc’teryx adds Keprotec™ instep patches to the inside of both pant legs. These patches are meant to protect the material from wear and tear. Ski edges and ski boots can rub against the inside of ski pants and cause rips, so this added patch contributes to the pants’ durability and longevity.
100D Cordura® PowderCuffs™ are inside of the pant legs. These cuffs are designed to keep snow out of your boots. The Arc’teryx Sentinel PowderCuff stretches easily over ski boots and is thin.
The Sentinel pant is equipped with Slide ‘n Loc™ technology. This is a clipping mechanism that connects compatible Arc’teryx jackets with the pants. The Slide ‘n Loc™ technology ensures no powder can enter your coat.
Why They Aren’t the Best Snowboard Pants
To me, snowboard pants have room for butt pads or knee pads to wear under. When I hit the park, wearing butt pads, especially for it to not be noticeable to other people, I need my pants to be baggy.
The Arc’teryx pants, in the right size, are not baggy around the thighs and hips. The tighter fit leaves no room for snowboarding pads. This can be common in technical snowboarding pants, as you can see in several of Burton’s women’s snowboard pants, like the Burton [ak] Kimmy Bib. For a baggier fit, we love the Airblaster Sassy Hot Bibs. The fabric is not as technical as found with the Arc’teryx Sentinel Pants so while they are very waterproof they are not as breathable.
Second, the pants are stiff and flair at the bottom. When you strap into your snowboard, you must lift the pant leg to avoid strapping the pants into the bindings. Conversely, the best snowboard pants have a cuffed pant leg to avoid lifting your pants every time to strap in.
Advanced Ski Pants Material
These Arc’teryx ski pants are made with the famous GORE-TEX material. This material is loved for its waterproof and weatherproof performance.
Let’s break down the N80p-X GORE-TEX Fabric with 3L lo-loft soft shell construction. The N is for nylon. 80p-X refers to the denier, or density, of the material, which, in this case, is pretty thin. The 3L stands for a three-layer construction. The Lo-loft soft shell means lightweight insulation.
There is also a flannel backer in the pants for light insulation. This insulation provides some protection for those extra cold days. The material is smooth to the touch.
In everyday terms, the Sentinal Relaxed ski pants are some of the most weather-protective and durable. The high-tech material creates the perfect wearing experience.
Ideal Wearing Conditions for the Arc’teryx Sentinel Relaxed
The Sentinel snow pants can be worn in nearly any ski resort condition. It is recommended to wear a base layer with these pants, whether it’s warm or cold; check out our How to Layer for Skiing guide if you want some extra pointers.
These Arc’eryx ski pants thrive in snowy conditions due to the high waterproof rating from the GORE-TEX material. They also do well against the wind.
Due to their breathability, the Sentinel Relaxed Ski Pants can also do well in sunny, warmer conditions. Simply unzip the thigh vents, and you’re feeling right again.
Value of Arc’teryx Ski Pants
The Arc’teryx Sentinel Relaxed ski pants clock in at $600. This is double most snow sport pants and triple the rest. However, the value they bring to the table tips the scales in Arc’teryx’s favor.
It is impossible to get away from the expense of the GORE-TEX material. So that is a contributor to the price. You will also be paying for the Arc’teryx brand name. You could consider Patagonia’s Storm Shift ski pants for a relaxed fit Gore-Tex pant, though the Storm Shift have 2L Gore-tex, and they are much heavier and bulkier than the Arc’teryx Sentinel Relaxed pants.
But with the brand name comes the patented pants patterning that feels awesome with every skiing movement. Arc’teryx also spends a lot of time on research and development, and new innovations can be seen year after year, like with their new, very lightweight yet insulated Sabre Insulated snow pants.
We Recommend these High-End Ski Pants
After in-depth testing and research, the Arc’teryx Sentinel Relaxed ski pants are worth every penny. The Sentinel Relaxed pants’ fit, performance, and weatherproof components elevate them into superior high-end ski pants.
These are your champion if you want the best pair of ski pants on a powder day. But thanks to the material’s breathability and vents, they also perform great on warmer blue bird days. These can be your everyday ski pants thanks to their durability and versatility.
And they will last you. With the high price comes great fabric design and durability, making your investment last through many ski seasons to come.
