Don’t Judge by the Price – Wildhorn Roca Goggles Exceed Expectations

The spherical-shaped lens provides ultra-wide protection but does not limit peripheral vision

The Wildhorn Roca ski goggles exceeded my initial expectations due to their low price point. No way goggles under $100 can look, feel, and perform like high-end goggles; wrong. The Roca ski and snowboard goggles look great, feel pleasing to the touch, are comfortable, and have an performance all day.

If the spherical lens isn’t your choice, check out the Pipeline snow goggles by Wildhorn Outfitters.

Aurora Lens Technology

Magnetic Lens

Wildhorn Outfitters has invented Aurora lens technology. Aurora lens technology combines key features that allow for sound lens performance. You get a magnetic lens, 100% UV blocking, and anti-fog and anti-scratch lens material.

The Roca lens is removable by clips and magnets, it can be done in seconds

A desirable feature of the Aurora lens tech is the interchangeable N45 magnetic lens. There are seven different lenses to choose from that match the Roca’s.

You can get the Wildhorn Outfitters package that offers the Roca’s with an additional lens for $70-75. You can also purchase different lenses separately.

The only issue with the lens change system is the clip on the side that fastens the lens to the frame. The quality of plastic used in the frame again reflects the low price point of these goggles; it feels brittle compared to similar components in other goggles, particularly in cold weather.

Clarity and Contrast

Taking resort laps on bluebird days, I felt like I got everything I needed from the Roca. I handled minor changes in ambient lighting, sliding into tree stands and back out onto the groomed slope with no surprises or frustration.

However, when clouds and fog were present, they started to fall behind the higher-quality builds. This variable performance is a significant consideration if you’re headed out on days where the weather is questionable and your range of vision is restricted by blankets of fog or fuzzy falling snow.

The Roca Ski Goggles by Wildhorn Outfitters with a spherical lens shape

On flat light days, I felt much more comfortable switching to a different pair of goggles, even those with a similar VLT range as the lenses I used with the Roca. The disparity comes down to its build quality. Wildhorn’s lenses are just tinted–without the contrast filters we see from premium alternatives.

Goggle Lens Material

The Roca lens is made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is an excellent protective sports lens due to its impact resistance and shatter-proof properties. Polycarbonate is also 100% UV-blocking. UV blocking is an essential ski goggle lens trait due to the extreme UV levels at altitude and the snow reflectivity.

Included in the Aurora lens technology are scratch resistance and anti-fog coatings. This addition catapults these goggles to better performance and a longer lifespan. The scratch-resistant coating seems to work well. We do know from testing that the anti-fog coating definitely works well.

The field of view of the Roca ski goggles is extended. The spherical lens provides a panoramic view with hardly any frame visible in your peripheral. There are no visual distractions from the goggle frame. Seeing the world around you is easy with the Roca’s.

All about the Frame and Helmet Compatibility

The Roca snowboard goggles are made with a Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) frame. TPU provides a few qualities that make it an excellent goggle frame, including temperature resistance.

First, the durability of the goggle frame is outstanding, so taking a slam to the face won’t break it. If you slam your face, the impact resistance trait of TPU will help disperse and absorb the impact energy. Also, the TPU frame’s resistance to wear and tear is top-notch. Last, Roca’s lightweight frame material creates a more comfortable user experience.

Wildhorn Outfitters has a custom ventilation design. The ventilation works well with all helmets and is not limited to Wildhorn helmets because the multiple vents match different helmet vent locations. The Roca’s ventilation system is designed to allow vast amounts of air to circulate through the goggles.

This approach is practical at lower speeds and with dry air, but again, unless you’re purely a fair-weather skier, you’re likely to run into issues with them before long. For my part, during a misty day, I ended up with condensation buildup, from cold damp air being trapped inside the goggles.

Goggle Strap and Foam Breakdown

The Roca goggle strap has rubber for grip and an adjustable strap

The Roca ski and snowboard goggles have a high-quality strap. The adjustable strap competes with high-end snow goggles. It is made of cotton, polyester, and rubber for a high-performing and comfortable goggle strap.

A unique property that elevates the Roca strap is the rubber on the inside of the strap. The rubber provides excellent grip. So whether your goggle strap is under your helmet or over, it stays securely in place.

Wildhorn Outfitters uses the highest-grade triple-layer foam in the goggles. This foam layer is in direct contact with your face. The Roca’s goggle foam is comfortable and soft.

Value

The value of the Roca ski goggles is nearly unbeatable. Comparing these to top brands like Oakley and Smith, the frame and strap materials are comparable in performance.

The main thing that sets these back from the $300 price point goggles will be the lens clarity and contrast. The lens clarity is just below that of the high-priced goggles. The contrast is decent but does not match Oakley or Smith’s technology. Occasionally, when the sun hits just right, a glare can be seen across the inside of the lens, which does not happen with high-end goggles.

We Recommend Them

The side profile of the Roca Ski goggles

Overall, the Roca ski and snowboard goggles perform extraordinarily well for the low price point. The protection factor of these goggles is competitive with leading brands. The spherical-shaped lens appeals to many snow sports enthusiasts, specifically skiers.

These Wildhorn goggles don’t fog or scratch easily. The magnetic interchangeable lens is convenient. The lens is shatterproof and 100% UV protection. The downside to these goggles is the visual lens performance. The lens occasionally catches a glare. The contrast is not as good as leading brands like Oakley and Smith’s goggles.
