The Brighton Pullover shows what a Volcom snowboard jacket can do. It’s a shell anorak that brings versatility to snowboarding with style. After a full season with this jacket, we find it one of the best all season options for any terrain or type of riding.
It’s priced in around the middle of the pack, with features and coolness that put it beyond what’s similar from the likes of Burton or North Face. There are too many features to name.
We’re talking pockets that make sense, cinches in all the right places, a hood that wraps around a helmet with ease and a collar that will save your chin and nose in the chill wind.
No Gore-Tex might lessen the waterproofing, but it protects just fine against mild rain in our experience without the environmental burden.
Things we like:
-
Hood and collar work great with a helmet
-
All the pockets!
-
Covers the buttocks
-
Powder skirt
-
Unified handwarmer pocket
-
Cinches to fit different body types
-
Side zips are great for donning and venting when warm
-
Venting makes this one great for backcountry
-
Too many features to mention here
Things we don't like:
-
Missing Gore-Tex for torrential wetness
-
No sleeve pocket for liftpass/chip
A Practical & Cool Jacket
Volcom has a fairly well-established style that’s cool without being flashy. Its minimalism on the Pullover is outstripped by the functional diversity of this snowboard jacket.
The pockets and cooling zips are exactly what you need for varying weather. It’s weather-proof outer shield (with wowing names like “aqua guard”, for example) profile matches up so easily with some reasonable layering.
One of the more unique, and well-designed bits on this hoodie like jacket is the soft chin guard that won’t chafe–whether zipped up in frost or opened with vents.
The hood also is big enough for a helmet.
More Than a Retro Jacket
Volcom describes this snowboard jacket as harkening back to yesteryear’s styles. The model we have is a pretty minimalist colored option that seems a bit more tactical than retro. And with all the advancements in lining, material and functions, it’s a very modern jacket that’s made this snowboarder happy in weird weather, as well as his 16-year old son going out on a wintery friday.
Additionally, this is going to be a great jacket for backcountry action, including especially splitboarding.
Here’s a breakdown of those functions:
