While the debate over hardshell versus softshell ski jackets rages on, Patagonia has effectively covered their bases with a jacket that captures the best qualities from both camps.
The Stormstride is a stretchy, lightweight, and highly breathable shell built for both fair and foul-weather days exploring the backcountry. If you’re a cold-weather aerobic enthusiast, the Stormstride is an excellent option for unrestricted range of motion, elemental protection, and temperature regulation.
While the Stormstride holds up in most winter weather, it’s a much better option for low or no-precipitation days. Pertex, backed by Patagonia’s in-house H2No Membrane, performs admirably, but there’s no getting around the compromises one makes for the mobility in stretchy fabric.
With these details noted, we think the Stormstride fills a sizable niche, including cross-country skiers, on-piste uphillers, and fairweather backcountry enthusiasts.
Things we like:
-
A high-mobility shell that offers above-average protection for stretchy fabric
-
An excellent option for uphill skiers who only go out in good weather
Things we don't like:
-
The materials can’t compete with Gore-Tex for wind and water protection
- Material: 3L 40-denier Pertex nylon with two-way stretch, polyester knit backer, PFC-free DWR finish
- Type: Waterproof Shell
- Waterproof/Windproof: Yes/Yes
- Details: Adjustable hood, two zippered chest pockets, internal zippered pocket, internal drop-in pocket, powder skirt, built-in RECCO reflector
- Weight: 1 lb, 1.3 oz
