Patagonia’s Down Sweater is a standout in their line of well-regarded outerwear for all of the typical reasons that make Patagonia products great. This iconic jacket should look familiar if you’ve spent any time in ski resort base areas, backpacking basecamps, or any city that gets seasonal winter weather.
Recent updates to the Down Sweater have made it better than ever. This new version features more effective insulation, a trim athletic cut, and a shell made of recycled fishing nets. Updates aside, the things we like most about the Down Sweater are the same as they’ve ever been: it’s packability, sleek look, and potential for layering make it an ideal all-rounder for virtually anyone.
In our view, the most notable issue with this jacket is its poor performance in wet conditions. The down in this jacket isn’t treated and is therefore prone to losing its insulative capabilities when it gets wet. There are also some minor concerns with the durability of the shell- a good poke with a jagged branch could spell major trouble. Worries aside, Patagonia’s Down Sweater is an excellent jacket you can wear anywhere.
Things we like:
-
Made with sustainability best practices with bonus points for Patagonia’s NetPlus recycled nylon
-
Warm enough for winter, versatile enough for any sport
Things we don't like:
-
The shell is thin and could be subject to rips and tears from natural hazards
-
Untreated down isn’t good for wet conditions
