Modern Freeriding Giro Ski Helmet

The Tenaya ski helmet keeps up with shredders

Giro recently added the Tenaya Spherical women’s ski and snowboard helmet to their market-leading helmet lineup. The male counterpart is the Tor Spherical ski helmet. When shredding the mountain, these Giro ski helmets level up protection, comfort, and style.

Giro partnered with Bell to invent Spherical Technology to better protect brains. The Spherical Tech has two layers that act as a ball-in-socket to reduce rotational impact forces. Of course, Mips® is used as an additional protection method.

The hybrid construction elevates the Tenaya and Tor ski helmets even further, making one beast of a helmet. With Giro’s hybrid protection, take freeriding to the next level.

The Tenaya ski helmet is very stylish, with nice aesthetic touches

On another note, Giro uses little aesthetic touches to make this Giro ski helmet eye-catching and appealing. Each helmet color has special finishes, such as a color pop or brim pattern. This ski helmet is super stylish and has excellent goggle integration free of gaper gap.

Giro Tenaya Ski Helmet’s Versatile Fit and Comfort

The Tenaya is awarded 5/5 for its fit and comfort. Users will notice the Tenaya ski helmet thrives with extended hours on the ski hill, whether warm or cold. Several features make this ski helmet outstanding in this category.

After using the Tenaya ski helmet for weeks, the fit and comfort were tried and true in all conditions. Whether I wore my goggles over or under, with a head covering or not, I love the fit of this helmet.

The dial apart of the In Form™ 2 Fit System to adjust the helmet size

A ski helmet should cover your forehead and extend to the base of your skull. The helmet should not move when you shake your head from left and right and up and down.

The In Form™ 2 Fit System creates a custom fit in seconds. This system is lighter and has a lower profile than the original. A dial at the base of the skull allows for 6cm of adjustment to dial in a tailored fit, even with gloves on. This fit system is similar to the BOA adjustment system used in the Anon Windham Wavecel Helmet.

Using the In Form™ 2 Fit System is easy and can be done with or without gloves. The fit system does not loosen as the day goes on. Make sure to loosen it before putting on and taking off the helmet.

The PlushMax padding is comfortable, sweat-wicking, and warm

The Tenaya Spherical women’s helmet uses PlushMax padding to ensure comfort. Reach inside the helmet and feel the soft felt liner and ear pads. The helmet padding is super comfortable, with or without a head covering.

The helmet padding helps keep you warm if it’s a cold day. The PlushMax padding wicks away sweat when it’s warm, keeping you comfortable. This is super-quality helmet padding.

The Giro Tenya is equipped with a Fidlock® magnetic buckle chin strap. The buckle is easy to do and undo with one hand, even with gloves. A soft pad protects the chin from the strap.

Wear the chin strap about a finger width from your chin to ensure a good helmet fit. One of the only problems encountered with this Giro ski helmet was that the chin strap tends to loosen. You can quickly re-tighten it, but it happens too often.

Easy-to-Use Adjustable Ventilation

The Tenaya helmet’s ventilation systems are outstanding. This ski helmet perfectly adapts to any temperature and condition. This feature is a massive part of why the Tenaya ski and snowboard helmet is so comfortable.

The Thermostat Control™ adjustable venting from Giro provides custom-tuning of airflow with a simple control switch on the top of the helmet. Switching the vents open and closed with gloves on or off while skiing or standing is a breeze.

Switch the vents open and closed with ease using Thermostat Control™

To check every ventilation box, Giro uses Stack Vent™ Technology to provide maximum ventilation for ski goggles. The Stack Vents sit above the ski goggles and are permanently open. The vents work wonders at mitigating fog and moisture.

Excellent Goggle Integration

The Giro Tenaya women’s ski helmet is seamlessly compatible with all Giro goggles. However, Oakley and Smith’s goggles also work well with the Tenaya. The Tenaya puts gaper gap fear to rest.

Giro uses On-the-fly Vertical Tuning to accommodate different goggles and head shapes. Place your helmet on your head, tighten the fit system, and boom, you have a custom fit, eliminating a goggle and helmet gap. In contrast, other ski helmets like the Smith Method Mips don’t have these features and can struggle with a gaper gap if you are using other manufacturer’s goggles.

Optimal Ski Helmet Construction

The Tenaya has a goggle retainer strap to secure ski goggles

The Tenaya Spherical women’s ski helmet uses hybrid construction to optimize protection while remaining lightweight. Hybrid construction is one of three construction processes.

Hardshells are heavier and more protective. In-mold designs are light and less protective, and Hybrids are the best of both worlds.

The upper portion of the helmet uses hard shell construction. This means the two layers are bonded together. The lower portion and sidewalls are constructed with a lightweight in-mold design.

The helmet’s exterior shell is an EPS layer to address high-speed impacts. EPS has excellent absorption but poor resilience. EPS can dent beyond repair, rendering the helmet useless.

A look at the dual layers of the Tenaya ski helmet

The inner layer of the Tenaya ski helmet is EPP. EPP is used for its rebound characteristics. This helps with impact absorption at slower-speed falls. This layer also helps with helmet longevity.

Ski Helmet Tech Protection Info

Giro has the reliable MipsⓇ brain protection system in the Tenaya Spherical ski helmet. However, Giro went a step further by inventing Spherical Technology.

Working with Bell, they develop a unique ball-and-socket design. Spherical Technology uses progressive layering to distribute forces. The Tenaya uses two layers and MIPSⓇ to reduce rotational forces, which are linked to concussions.

MipsⓇ Spherical Technology makes this ski helmet a leader in head protection

The Tenya Spherical ski helmet is European-certified. The CE EN1077 certification means that it passed a series of impact and temperature tests. This Giro helmet is a valid brain bucket protector.

Disappointingly, the only differences between women’s and men’s ski helmets are the aesthetics and lining material. Instead of helmet engineers designing women’s helmets to match women’s head shapes for better protection, they just use a men’s/”unisex” helmet design.

Tenaya’s Unbeatable Value Explained

The Tenaya Spherical women’s helmet holds excellent value. Ski and snowboard helmet prices range from $50 to $500. The price depends on the construction type, helmet material, and protection technology.

The Tenaya is stylish, protective, and comfortable, all at a great price

There are three construction types. In-mold helmets are the least expensive and offer the least protection. Hardshell helmets are the most expensive and offer the most protection. Hybrid helmets fall somewhere in between.

The Tenaya is more competitively priced than other hybrid helmets, especially for its modern perks. Its protection, fit, adjustability, and comfort are undeniably valuable and offered at a great price point.

This Giro Ski Helmet Takes Premium All-Mountain Performance to the Next Level

After several weeks of ripping Mammoth Mountain top to bottom in the Tenaya ski helmet, the performance was tested; we can officially say it provides premium all-mountain performance, especially for the buy-in price.

Apart from the stellar brain-protection system, the comfort and fit stood out as a top highlight. Wear this ski helmet in any fashion you want, besides backward, concerning your goggles and beanie. Tackle any weather and stay comfortable with the Tenaya ski and snowboard helmet.

The Mips® Spherical tech, Thermostat Control™ adjustable ventilation, In Form™ 2 fit system, Fidlock® magnetic buckle, On-the-fly Vertical Tuning, Stack Vent™ Technology, and PlushMax padding make the Tenaya the best hybrid helmet available.
